““Bride and Best Man”

The idea of industrial materials being used for a ‘bride and Best man’ outfit, instead of luxurious fabrics was appealing to me. I scrounged old inner tubes, construction insulation, bird net, a sari and some wire, (I bought new wire, I didn’t like the effect or pliability of the salvaged wire). The tubes and insulation needed scrubbing to remove dust, plaster, oil, dirt etc. The bird net looked good with debris in it and the sari had probably been folded in the dowery box for years unworn. Difficulties – machine needle needed constant wiping with turps to remove the glue from the insulation sheets, and the inner tubes were too tough to sew. Making a hat using the inner tube is (still) challenging. 4 main materials were given to me, I had ribbon and eyelets already and I purchased wire and curtain tape new. Total cost $14.00”
